Encore joins the Science Based Targets initiative

We have become one of just three other print companies in the UK to have committed to having our emissions targets validated with the Science Based Targets Initiative.

The Science Based Targets Initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, WRI and the WWF, focused on helping businesses to set a target that meets the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Currently, there are 3,000 businesses across the globe using the Science Based Target Initiative, which provides a clearly defined pathway for organisations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We have committed to a 46% reduction in scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2027 from a 2019 base year. This is in line with keeping global warming to 1.5°C which is the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement. We are also aiming to submit a net-zero target for validation through SBTi. In August 2022, there were just 14 UK companies that have had such ambitious net-zero targets validated with the SBTi.

In order to reach this goal, we are required to reduce annual emissions by 725 tonnes of CO2e.

In a bid to meet this target, we are making the transition to zero-carbon electricity and have introduced electric vehicles to its sales fleet. For more information on what we do internally here at The Encore Group to reduce our environmental impact, click here.

The emissions that have yet to be reduced are currently offset through our work with the global conservation charity, World Land Trust. We are the UK’s first and only Carbon Balanced envelope manufacturer.

To learn more about the initiative, you can read the following Earth Island magazine article, which highlights our Managing Director’s thoughts on having our targets validated and also includes a quote from Greg Selfe, Managing Director of Nero, who Encore will be working closely with throughout our net-zero journey.
